Local “Mega-Mart” Never Fails to Disappoint and Disgust

I try really hard to be local, but in Central Vermont in February, it’s rough. Sometimes I get a client who just wants what they want, in season or not, so I head to the local “Mega-Mart” type store, often with my kids (age 2 & 4) in tow. I’m there for food, they really just want to see the lobsters. My boys like to find the biggest one and crown him the King. After I fill my cart we head to the “tank”. We can kind of see the lobsters through the grey, murky water. What we do see is the one dead lobster indicated by its shell several shades lighter than the others and it’s up-side-down stature. The dead give away is the fact that all the other lobsters were eating it. “Your lobsters dead” I informed the lady working behind the tank. “Yeah, I’ll get it later”. Well enough (???)…we head to the checkout. Nearly $400 for 1 cart of “food”. I scan my “Mega-Mart” super duper savings card. I’m pumped! How much will I save this time? $100? $150? Not even close. I save $1.75. Yup, less than 2 bucks and I had to explain cannibalism to my kids (not really). I asked the cashier why only 2 dollars saved? “Fresh produce, meat and raw materials don’t really go on sale”. Awesome. Next time I shall buy Skankies, Twoonkies and Dumpies or whatever that prepackaged garbage is called.
